Mach graduated from Bloomsburg University with a bachelor in communication and a masters in instructional technology. Mach is continuing her education here at Johns Hopkins University School of Education in the fall of 2014. Mach loves over sized bags and watches, tropical locations, her nieces and nephews, and loves to hate working out and eating well.

To-Do Lists Are Evil

OK, so we’ve all heard it before. “I’m too busy. I have meetings, multiple projects, kids, and/or a thousand other things to do but just not enough time to do it all.” Well, I’m currently working full-time and I’m also a part-time graduate student. I find that there are just too many deadlines for me to stay on top of it all without exhausting myself. So how do I manage things? How can I meet both my deadlines for work and school — and also make it home on time to cook dinner and workout?

According to an article by Eric Barker, “Barking up the wrong tree,” there are five steps you can take to manage your crazy, hectic schedule and still come out alive and healthy:

  1. To-do lists are evil. Schedule everything.
  2. Assume you’re going home at 5:30, and then plan your day backwards.
  3. Make a plan for the entire week.
  4. Do very few things, but be awesome at them.
  5. Do less shallow work—focus on the deep stuff.

Now prioritize and commit yourself to tackling those tasks!

 

Email Etiquette Via iPad

iPads and iPhones are not only for personal use, but also for professional use. More and more, technology plays a big part in our daily lives. Laptops and desktops aren’t the only things that we use to read and respond to emails. I personally find that I am more prone to using my iPad or my iPhone when responding to emails on the go.

One thing I’ve noticed is that when I receive a work-related email, the signature is generally either “sent from my iPad” or nothing at all. Best practice is to provide basic contact information in the signature, and state that you are using a tablet or a smartphone. This gives you the opportunity to apologize for the brevity of your response or even the odd grammatical error or typo.

Here’s how to set up your signature via iPad:

  1. Open Settings, select “Mail, Contacts, calendars,” and tap “Signature” on the right panel.
  2. Where it says “Sent from my iPad,” add additional contact information, including things like your name, title, company name, and phone number.
  3. Tab the “mail, Contacts…” button when done.
