Many people who work here at Johns Hopkins know the answer to the common trivia question, “Who was the only U.S. president with a doctorate?”

The answer is, of course, Woodrow Wilson.

Woodrow Wilson received his doctorate in 1886 from The Johns Hopkins University (where else?), and his dissertation was entitled Congressional Government: A Study in American Politics.

Woodrow Wilson was also the first of only three American presidents to receive a Nobel Prize. (The others were Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.) He received his prize in 1920 for his efforts in ending World War I and for forming the League of Nations.

Today’s quotation from Woodrow Wilson should resonate with everyone who works at the university, and should inspire everyone to help to make the world a better place:

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”
